Decide what your main reason is for wanting a heat pump
It is a good idea when you are considering installing a heat pump in your home or work place to ask yourself a few relevant questions. One of these might be: how do I choose the right heat pump for my environment, or is it primarily for heating or is cooling more important? Or, if you live in an area that is prone to frost there are some essential things you need to be aware of.
Here are 4 tips to help you choose wisely:
For example, your heat pump could stop heating every now and again when there is a frost. This is because your heat pump is defrosting. To get heat out of the air, your heat pump cools everything down. It’s similar to how your fridge operates except in reverse.
When the outside temperature drops and the air cools to create frosty conditions, the heat pump is unable to hold water. This is called the dewpoint temperature which is the temperature where air can’t hold all the water it is mixed with.
So, if the climate is relatively humid and the temperature overnight drops to the dew point, but not quite to freezing point, your heat pump will ice up.This will cause it to stop heating so that it can defrost itself. This is not to say that the heat pump will not work in cooler climates, it’s just that you will need more specialised advice on the type of heat pump that will work best in your circumstances, as well as advice on placement of the outdoor unit
Understand the different types of heat pumps
For our New Zealand climate, even during those really cold snowfalls as experienced in Otago for instance, the type of heat pump you choose will depend on your location, as well as the size and the style of you home.
For a heat pump to operate effectively and efficiently you also need to measure the area that you want to heat and cool. In this case, size does matter!
Work out the energy efficiency of the system.
In terms of efficiency, the ‘Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority’ (EECA) endorses heat pumps as being among the best forms of heating on the market today.
A good quality and correctly sized heat pump is one of the most efficient ways to warm or cool your home or office.

A heat pump will use a lot less energy than other heating sources because heat pumps don’t actually create heat. A heat pump uses the heat available in the air then pushes this heat into the room. In other words heat pumps don’t create heat, they convert heat.
Also, it’s a good idea to look for the Energy Star® label or energy rating when choosing your heat pump. A good understanding of energy ratings can save you’re a lot of money on energy bills in the long-term.
A new heat pump may initially cost more than other sources of heating, but you will find over time that your savings will be a lot more significant because of this energy efficiency.
Ensure you choose the right installer
Installation of your heat pump can make all the difference to the efficiency of your heating and cooling.
Safety should be of the utmost importance when you get your heat pump installed. Ensure your installer gives you a ‘Certificate of Compliance’ once the installation is complete.
