Frequently Asked Questions
Here you will find the answers to some of the questions our customers have asked us about heat pumps and air conditioning units. Read through for tips on how to maintain your unit so you can always get the best value from your investment.
Q. Why does my heat pump ice up on the coil and pipes?
A. Heat pumps will naturally ice-up in the winter but will periodically go into a defrost cycle. This keeps the unit running efficiently and in winter it is normal for the entire coil to be covered in frost, even a light ice. It is not normal however, for the entire unit to be encased in ice for any extended period of time.
Q. How can I cool my room quickly
A. When it comes to heating and cooling a room, every home is different. There is no “one size” fits all. Many factors come into play including the outside temperature, the size of the room, the number of windows and the amount or possible lack of insulation. The size and capacity of your heat pump will also factor highly – if it is too small or too large, it will use more energy than needed and end up costing you more to heat or cool to the level you require.
Q. What is a heat pump?
A. To put it simply a heat pump provides heating to your home in the winter and cooling in the summer in the most efficient and cost effective way. It also has dehumidifying benefits which suck the moisture out of the room to keep it dry and warm. When the heat pump is working in the cooling mode function, the room will automatically dehumidify. In heating mode, there is no need for the heat pump to dehumidify as the warm air that circulates around the room removes the moisture.
Q. What is air conditioning?
A. It’s very easy to do this and you can tell if it needs cleaning if you think your heat pump is not pushing much air flow into your home – this would indicate that you the filters are blocked. As a rule of thumb you should clean these every 8 to 12 weeks depending on how often you use your heat pump. It’s a simple process and something you can do yourself.
Q. How do I clean my heat pump filter?
A. It’s very easy to clean your filter. You can tell if it needs cleaning if you think your heat pump is not pushing much air flow into your home – this would indicate that you the filters are blocked. As a rule of thumb you should clean these every 8 to 12 weeks depending on how often you use your heat pump. It’s a simple process and something you can do yourself.
Q. What temperature should I run my heat pump at?
A. Generally we advise to run your heat pump between 20 and 22 degrees in the winter and if you want to run it all night you can drop the temp back to 16 to 18 degrees.
In the summer time you could run your heat pump at 20 degrees and if you were to run it all night you could increase the temp to 22 degrees.
Q. How do heat pumps affect my family's health?
A. Keeping your house at a steady warm temperature is integral to keeping your family healthy. By installing a heat pump, it will be incredibly easy to keep your home at a warm and healthy temperature.
Q. How efficient are heat pumps in terms of cost and energy
A. They are incredibly efficient in terms of energy use, ultimately saving you money in power bills. The reason heat pumps are able to use much less energy that other heat sources, is because they do not in fact create heat. Rather the heat pump uses the available heat in the air and moves it from one place to another.
Q. What can I do about landscaping around the outside of my heat pump unit?
A. The space around your outside unit is important. Just as clean filters are essential, so too is the unobscured space around a unit that allows it to disperse air easily and avoids overworking.
